Firebird Rising: Phase 1 – Funding

Dearest Burner Community,

It is with extreme pleasure that I have the opportunity to present you with Firebird Rising. I am so excited that this show will be coming into existence. It’s struck a spark within me.

Firebird RisingDo you remember the first time you saw the Playa at night? That sense of overwhelming wonder and amazement. A place ripe with beauty and magic! Lights and sound cascading into the air of the world to create a physical pulse of something truly alive and deeply right. Travelers that were never truly strangers would pass and look you in the eyes and smile, because you are beautiful! What’s that shining light in the distance? Is it art? Is it a person? Whatever it is, it’s where you need to be and oh Oh! The journey there will be quite delightful! Let’s hop a ship and gift a story. Dance and tumble and laugh and breathe! Scream ‘I am!’ and hug your neighbor.

Do you remember the first time you came upon the Temple? Reading the lives of humanity. Learning their stories. The silence. The sound of fifty thousand whispers and the intricate weave of healing. A cry of joy from the masses at sunrise, just for the shear sake of greeting the sun. The warmth of the fire on your face as you say goodbye for yet another year.

Do you remember the first time you rounded the final corner and saw the city of Black Rock? The size and shape of a city centered around one lone figure, visited by all who attend. Do you remember your first burn? Hundreds of individual fires igniting at once to create a shared experience of something amazing. The rushing excitement as we all lit up as one and celebrated our existence!

Dearest Burners, we have created a new culture, something wonderful, worth living for. We have created a culture that has no physical boundaries, no religious requirements, and is open and available to all who wish to participate.

It’s time to gift another slice of our culture to the default world. Firebird Rising is that gift. Combining light, sound, visual effects, theater, puppetry, projection mapping, aerial dancing, fire, stilts and more all choreographed to original musical pieces interlaced with Stravinsky’s Firebird, Firebird Rising is going to be an inspiration to all it touches.

It needs some help in getting off the ground. As of this writing, Firebird Rising has raised $7,000 of the $25,000 that it needs to come into existence. Please, take five minutes out of your day and watch the video below. Be inspired. Contribute if you can and if you can’t, please help us spread the word of Firebird Rising by sharing the Indiegogo campaign and the video. We have less than one week left to meet our goal.

Thank you,

Nate Caretaker

Performance in a World of Possibilities

The world is a truly amazing place. It’s full of wonders. Get outside, seek them out, create them. It will make things interesting.

I’ve always loved being on the stage. Getting up in front of a crowd and moving, singing, dancing and laughing. Inspiring people. It’s something worth loving.

Every performer knows the magic that is performance. The magic of getting ready for a show, the fun chaos of hell weeks. The singular focus that brings multiple people together to create something fun, and something new.

Stanislovsky had it right. Being a performer is a noble thing. Others get to see you living life in an amazing world. Others become involved, entrapped in something that they connect with at a basic level. It helps bring purpose into their worlds. Another reason to live.

Sometimes I want to empower the world so that people’s true capacities can be fully reached. Everyone is capable of everything. As soon as an individual realizes this, the possibilities in their life tend to open. Empower each other. It makes everything more awesome.

Performing in a New City

Seattle

Two weeks ago, I moved to Seattle. Things out here have been extremely interesting and fast paced. Everything is different and everything is similar.

It’s so green out here! I come from Colorado, a very dry and desert-like place. Colorado has amazing mountains, but very little water in comparison to Seattle. Out here, things are green year-round and right now, everything is starting to bloom.

There’s so much water out here! Every time I go over, under, across, and see a bridge, I say one of three things: Wow, Pretty, or Water! Right after that it’s usually: Look at the boats!!! It’s going to be a while before I get over the visual stimulation of this city.

The bus system in Seattle is very functional. I’m getting used to keeping a few dollars on me to be able to take the bus instead of taking my car. That being said, I’m still very happy to have a car in Seattle. It gives me the freedom to move around as I see fit.

The Job

I didn’t get the job that I was going for at SEOmoz, which is quite a bummer. Their lack of communication after the interview process is quite annoying, but other than that, it was a really fun and intense interview process. I’m slamming out the applications daily now. Amazon, Microsoft, and small to medium sized businesses, I’m applying everywhere for marketing, internet marketing, SEO, and administrative assistant positions.

I’ve decided to also try and get my own business up and running. I will be building websites for small to medium businesses using the WordPress platform. I will then maintain these websites and do freelance SEO, Social Media Marketing, and Inbound Marketing for new clients. I’m getting my portfolio up and running and I plan to announce the new business over on http://www.capacityanddesire.com/web/. I will also be doing an online fundraiser to get my new business off the ground. Please check back this Thursday for more information!

C+D Performance

I’ve been performing with New Vision Dance company for two weeks now. We have a performance coming up on May 5th and 6th. I’ll be posting about the show later. It’s been fun working with NVDC. We’ve already done a photo shoot and finished up choreography on one piece for the show.

Fire dancing is a blast out here in Seattle. There’s a really big community of fire performers out here. I’m working with NW Fire Conclave for the Burn as their Assistant Shin. We’re working on some very fun choreography and fire costumes. New choreography is leading me to learn new skills and is pushing me to develop myself as a performer.

I’m looking into getting a performance troupe going. This is a long-term project though and I’m definitely going to have to take the time to start developing costumes.

Now that I’ve finally settled in, I plan on getting back to posting 2 to 3 times a week from now on. As always, thank you for reading and please share Capacity and Desire with your friends!

C+D: Dancing and Fitness

Being a dancer involves constantly pushing your body to new and greater limits. I’m always working out, stretching, training, and exploring new movements. The more I push myself, the better life feels.

I’ve finally reached the point in my dancing career that I’m good enough to get paid. This, while wonderful, is pushing me to get into better physical condition. Carrying any extra weight is causing me to second guess myself in some visual areas. To combat this, I’m stepping up the workout routines and jumping into yoga.

Working out feels natural and Yoga is kicking my butt. I’m thinking of pushing it up to 5 days a week with workouts, and 3 to 4 days a week with Yoga. Eating healthy is going to be somewhat of a chore. I definitely don’t want to overdo it.

Are there any readers out there who also perform/dance? What do you do to stay in shape?

Here’s a video of a practice session I did about a month ago. I definitely need to work on my lower body movement and my legs.
